Over 16,000 cinema experiences delivered in 2023
16,124 patients and their family members visited our cinemas in 2023, across 1,200 screenings.
This includes 605 patients in their hospital beds, 2,675 patients using wheelchairs, and numerous patients using drips and other medical equipment who were able to watch the latest film releases under the watchful eye of the MediCinema nurses.
More than 180 patients came to us for personal screenings. These are specially programmed for those who may be immunocompromised, or for patients receiving palliative or end-of-life care who can share this special experience with their family or those closest to them.
2023 was the first year back to running regular screenings post COVID-19 and is an increase in attendees by 59% since 2022 with the number of screenings increasing by 13%.
MediCinema screenings give people in hospital the chance to meet other patients, including those going through similar challenges, as well as different members of the hospital staff team, cinema managers and our specially trained and dedicated MediCinema volunteers. The community and sense of normality we provide has powerful effects on the psychological wellbeing, resilience, and healing of those in hospital.
Our cinema services can be transformative for patient experience, bringing people together whilst enabling a sense of normality and escape. Together, the film and cinema experience creates real physical and mental separation from the routine of ward treatment. We are very proud to be able to provide this inside NHS spaces.
