MediCinema Unveils New Film to Illuminate the Therapeutic Power of Cinema in Hospitals
MediCinema has released a new film to educate more people about the proven wellbeing benefits of in-hospital cinema services.
Our pioneering and innovative approach provides therapeutic cinema experiences to improve the lives of tens of thousands of hospital patients and families across UK Hospital Trusts each year.
Our new video ‘Transforming the Hospital Experience with Cinema’ explores the multiple benefits of these in-hospital cinema programmes through powerful interviews with senior Hospital Trust leaders, clinical staff, and patients.
Coming down to see a film three times a week was a lifeline. Something to look forward to. It was a way of being able to put myself into the characters’ shoes – remove myself from where I was in life.
Claire, who shares her powerful story of undergoing intensive chemotherapy in Guy’s Hospital Foundation Trust during the educational film.
The cinema screening services are proven to reduce pain, anxiety and stress – with over half (56%) of visitors reporting reduced pain after their visit to the in-hospital cinema.
In our latest educational film, viewers hear from Lawrence Tallon, Deputy Chief Executive at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust about the importance of supporting over 2,200 people to benefit from cinema experiences while in hospital – in the last year alone.
Lesley Watts, Chief Executive of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust also shares her experience of the in-hospital MediCinema.
I’ve seen the difference it makes to do something that all the rest of us take for granted which is to go and watch a film. It’s transformative.

The film will be promoted to raise greater awareness of the options available to Hospital Trusts and to patients and families when it comes to in-hospital experiences.
We currently work with five NHS Trusts across the UK, working in partnership with clinical and ward-based teams to bring the wellbeing benefits of cinema to hospital communities.

Colin Lawrence, Chief Executive Officer, MediCinema, said:
“We are delighted to launch our new film, ‘Transforming the Hospital Experience with Cinema’ to bring greater awareness and understanding of the profound and positive impact made by our charity, and the importance of non-clinical, therapeutic hospital services provided through cinema.
“MediCinema touches the lives of tens of thousands of patients, families, and hospital staff each year, and we are grateful to all those who have shared their story with us as part of this film. Our hope is to continue to build our network of hospital-based cinemas by working in close partnership with hospital trusts and charities. This will enable more patients to benefit from our creative, therapeutic experiences, bringing a sense of normality, respite, choice and control to their hospital stay.”
